RICE AND GRACE HAGERMAN

RICE AND GRACE HAGERMAN

RICE C. HAGERMAN & GRACE E. HAGERMAN – b. St. Joseph County, Michigan, Sept. 19, 1877. The twins Rice and Grace were students at the Michigan Institution for the Deaf (today the Michigan School for the Deaf) when they died of diptheria two days apart. The school had the idea, novel in its time, that deaf and blind children could be taught like anyone else. For more than a hundred years, they were buried in unmarked graves that had been purchased by the school. Through the diligence of family members and researchers, the twins along with other students buried here are no longer forgotten and as of 2014 their graves are marked. d. Flint, Michigan, December 1885.
