J. DALLAS DORT

DALLAS DORT - b. Inkster, Michigan, Feb. 2, 1861. After attending school in Wayne, Michigan and later the Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti, Dort became a crockery salesman; From 1879 to 1885 he worked in hardware business in Flint and Saginaw. In 1886 he joined forces with W.C. Durant to form the Flint Road Cart Company with Dort serving as president and Durant as treasurer. The nascent enterprise (incorporated as the Durant-Dort Carriage Company in 1896) grew to become the largest volume manufacturer of carriages in the world. Dort led the firm into the automobile era by investing in Buick, the Little Motor Car Company, Mason Motor Company, General Motors and Chevrolet. In 1913 he guided the Durant-Dort Carriage Company into truck manufacturing and from 1915 to 1925 headed the Don Motor Co. His respected civic activities included: 1906 financing of the plan for Flint's Park system (Manning Plan); World War I War Bond Drive chairman; charter member of the Flint Community Music Association (his home on Kearsley street was given to the association upon his death); and sponsor of the Flint Vehicle Worker's Mutual Benefit Association (later the IMA.) d.
