HENRY H. CRAPO

HENRY H. CRAPO - b. Dartmouth, Massachusetts, May 24,1804. His involvement with Flint began in 1855 with the purchase of 14,000 acres in Lapeer County to be used for lumbering. In 1858 he moved his family to Flint and by 1860 had created one of the largest lumber concerns in the area. (The Crapo Mill was on the present site of Autoworld.) In 1861 Crapo constructed a railroad from Flint to Holly to connect with the Dctroit and Milwaukee Line for the shipment of lumber. His Flint and Holly railroad became part of the Flint & Pere Marquette system in 1868, and helped to transform Flint into a major industrial center. In 1860 he served as Mayor of Flint and in 1862 a state senator. By 1861 he was a prominent Republican figure and was elected governor of Michigan in1864 and again in 1865. He was the grandfather of W.C. Durant, founder of General Motors. d. Flint, Michigan, July 22, 1869.
