HARLOW H. CRUTICE

HARLOW H. CURTICE - b. Petrieville, Michigan, Aug. 15, 1893. He began his General Motors career as a bookkeeper at A.C. Spark Plug in Flint in 1914. By 1929 be had become president of A.C. and in 1933, was transferred to the same position with Buick. He made many changes at Buick introducing the Buick Special in 1934 which was largely responsible for Buick's recovery from the effects of the Depression of 1929. This success at Buick launched him to the executive vice-presidency of General Motors in 1948. From 1953 to 1958 he held the dual post of president and chief executive officer of the corporation. A Flint resident, he was the first GM president to guide the company's earnings over the 1 billion dollar mark. He was Time magazine's Man of the Year in 1954, and was responsible for securing a $3 million contribution from GM for the Flint College and Cultural Center in that same year. d.
