CHARLES STEWART MOTT

 CHARLES STEWART MOTT - b. Newark, New Jersey, June 2, 1875. Mott attended public schools in New York City, and Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1879 he received a degree in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute. In 1905 J. Dallas Dort and W.C. Durant persuaded Mott to move the Western-Mott Company to Flint from Utica, New York, to manufacture wheels and axles for the newly-formed Buick Motor Company. Western-Mott was purchased by General Motors in 1913, with Mott accepting GM stock as payment. Later that year he was named a director of GM, a post he held for over sixty years. He was an executive vice-president as well as chief of staff for the corporation until 1937. In 1927 he formed the Mott Foundation a philanthropic institution that has provided financing for Programs in Flint and throughout the world. By the early 60s, the foundation was one of the largest in the country. Mott was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, and a three time mayor of Flint. Countless honors and awards recognized his educational, cultural, health and recreational contributions. d. Flint, Michigan, February 18, l973.
